Almonds, sugar and honey are the traditional ingredients for the centuries-old Sicilian royal pastry. Fruits of Martorana pastries, kept inside the precious casket, are the most sought after sweets of the traditional Sicilian confectionery. During the Festivities of the Dead the nuns of the Martorana monastery prepared these almond and sugar sweets, calling back to the fruit in their gardens. Legend goes that not having enough fresh fruit to welcome the visit of the Holy Father, they created new ones with almond and sugar, thus managing to embellish the monastery.
